I want to look at a fundamental shift occurring in the global consciousness; one that will redefine the food and beverage industry more profoundly than any fad diet or regulatory tweak ever could. For decades, the medical and food industries have been obsessed with “lifespan.” We celebrated the fact that humans were living longer. But I believe we’ve been asking the wrong question.
What is the point of living to 90 if the last ten or twenty years are spent in cognitive decline or battling chronic metabolic disease?
The conversation is shifting. We are moving from “pro-longevity” to “anti-aging.” The focus is no longer just on how many years we can squeeze out of a human life, but on how many of those years are lived in vibrant, functional health. This is the era of Healthspan. And I believe food is the primary technology that will get us there.
More importantly, this is no longer just a food story. It is a food-and-health story. In fact, I’d put it even more directly: “if consumers are eating for their health then food companies are in the health industry”. That single idea changes the strategic map for every board, brand, and product team in the sector.
The Healthspan Gap: A Trillion-Dollar Problem
Currently, the average global lifespan is around 73 years, but the average healthspan is only about 63. That leaves a “gap” of ten years: a decade of what I call “diminished returns.” These are the years spent managing diabetes, heart disease, and mobility issues. For corporate leaders and boards, this isn’t just a health crisis; it’s a massive economic drag and a missed opportunity.
Imagine a world where 100 is the new 60. Not just in terms of appearance, but in terms of cellular energy, cognitive clarity, and physical resilience. This isn’t science fiction. By the time we reach a global population of 9.7 billion people in 2050, the demand for health-extending nutrition will be the single largest driver of value in the food sector.

Imagine an AI that tells you exactly which snack will stabilise your energy levels for your next board meeting based on your current blood chemistry.
Cellular Fuel: Beyond Calories
For a long time, the food industry was in the business of selling macros: fats, proteins, and carbs. But the longevity economy is built on bioactives.
I want to point your attention to emerging stars like C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid). I believe the winners of the next decade will be those who move from selling “products” to selling “outcomes.”

- Investment in Data Interoperability: Ensure your products can “talk” to the health tech ecosystem. If your product doesn’t have a data layer, it will eventually become invisible to the AI-driven consumer.
- Focus on Functional Efficacy: Move away from “health halos” and toward clinically backed ingredients. The longevity consumer is highly educated and will demand proof of impact on their “biological age.”
- Global Scalability: We must find ways to make these technologies affordable. We cannot feed 9.7 billion people in 2050 if longevity is only for the “longevity elite.”
